Cobfoolery - The bamboo shank (ENG)

So, we must to attach the bamboo shank to the cob itself.

Fist of all (already done previously) I sand the bamboo, removing the coated-like cover of the original bamboo. How Natura make this so solid and bright layer of coat?

I use some glue (Here in México, the special for wood is called "Resistol 850"), that I got for MX 7.50 (near US $0.4).

I need some "aserrin". So, I use a mortar to create little chunks of wood, and later passed thru a sifter.

As for the last moment, I decided to not create a straight shank, but with an angle. Using for this my matches box!

In order to save the interior of the cob, I use a piece of plastic tube. That gave me a guide inside the bowl.

I put a drop of glue, and make the joint!

After half an hour, I mix the aserrin with wood glue and then apply to the hollow spaces.

After 24 hours, here the final result! Next step, Painting our Ale Bridge!!

Cobfoolery - working with a real cob (ENG)

Here in México, we are people of corn. A lovely definition of corn it was: what it keeps life.

So, we love corn. Tortillas, gorditas, and so on, keeps corn around us even in the time of globalization.

I just bought this corn in January. I made a corn soup and let drying the cobs all over 3 monts. Here in Querétaro, sun is so heavy.

Because I do not how to work with cobs and plaster, I use one of that cobs. I use a piece of the cob, cutting of from the whole cob.

Using a sandpaper (here, the most familiar brand is "Fandelli") I made some work with the cob. Now, is so smooth.

Later, I made some plaster (with water) and cover the cob with it.

Here the result.

What's next? Try to make a hole inside the cob, and apply some mexican colors. Before I try with "the real thing": the MM Legend. 

La fierecilla domada (ESP)

La primera vez que fumé esta Mark Twain, cerca del final obtuve un horrible sabor a madera quemada. Sin embargo, al parecer es algo normal en estas pipas cuyo "caño" (no confundir con la boquilla) es de esa madera, que al estar en contacto con el calor, produce ese sabor indeseable.

Aprendí que mi experiencia es algo "normal", y que al formar el "cake" (carboncillo dentro de la cazoleta) ese sabor desaparecerìa. Ya casi lo hace, y mi amor por las MM ha regresado. Sin embargo, creo que pronto haré una operación para eliminar este horrible sabor en las primeras fumadas. 

Por lo pronto, esta pipa ya fuma bien. La pinté usando el mismo proceso: baba de nopal, pintura proveniente de tierras naturales, y sal. Aunque a esta cazoleta apliqué un poco de laca. 

Hoy, fumando un poco de Lane Limited 1Q, maridado con infusión de lavanda del huerto personal.

Here I am with cobfoolery contest. From the Corn cob pipe grab bag, I use a Missouri Meerschaum Legend to make some cobfoolery. How to do it?

In a forum of pipe smokers, I read that heating or cooling the pipe help. A guy says that only using pure brute force. That`s what we use here!

Using an iron tweezers (and also soften the process using a piece of fabric - not shown in the pictures).

Start rotating and listening the crack of the wood. Using a little more pressure, and rotating again. The glue between the shank and the cob start to show kind of hole.

More pressure and the piece of wood rotating. Finally, using only the hand, I remove the piece of wood. That's it. We have a cob with no shank.

Recomendations for the future. 

1. Next time I press more softly, but more time to make the process less aggresive. 

2. I will fill shank with some material in order to make more hard, and reuse the shank. Who knows. Today, I don't care but I could have a no more ready to use shank. 

3. I'm doing this process smoking Dunhill My Mixture 965. :D

Amazing! A day after I post my "tuning corn cob" a Youtube channel that I follow (Aristocob) broadcast the invitation for the cobfoolery 2016 contest.



I will try to "tuning" a new MM pipe in a newer fashion in order to attend this contest! Maybe not a winner, but I wanna have some fun!

Tuning a Corn Cob Pipe - en Español

Luego de ver los vídeos de un pipafumador de Ecuador de nombre Fabián Cuesta


y las modificaciones que hizo de sus pipas de mazorca, entran las ganas de hacer lo mismo con ellas. Y algo así hice con una MM Corn Cob Legend, aplicado únicamente al caño.

Preocupado por los químicos (aunque la MM tiene un recubrimiento de yeso y laca), la teñí usando un método que "me inventé": busqué un sobre de tintura comestible (un sobre de color rojo me costó $5 MX, en una tienda de pastelería), y en lugar de resina, usé baba de nopal (corté medio nopal pequeño y lo dejé remojando durante una noche), al que mezclé un poco de sal de grano. Apliqué varias capas (10 o 15); después de cada aplicación, la dejé reposar. El proceso total duró cerca de 5 días (por el tiempo que le dediqué, y que no tenía prisa, el secado iba cerca de 15-20 min o menos, así que con dedicación en un día está listo). A la boquilla, le apliqué un poco de Thermofit (se compra en tiendas de electrónica como STEREN, $12 el metro) como protección contra las mordidas. Aquí el resultado de esta primera incursión.

El sabor y la calidad de la fumada se han mantenido intactos. ¡A ver qué otra cosa se me ocurre más adelante!
